The HNM – Semmelweis Museum is located at the former birthplace of Ignác Semmelweis. The Museum exhibits one of the largest European historical collections of the western medicine.
The backbone of our exhibition entitled Pictures from the Past of Healing is the presentation of western medicine’s history; we intend to guide our visitors from ancient Egypt to the present day. Besides the medical and scientific books and documents, we have also exhibited equipments once used in medicine, paintings and sculptures depicting diseases and their cures. Furthermore, our guests can take a glance at the roots of the divergent and ever changing cultural traditions of western medicine. The permanent exhibition puts a special emphasis on the presentation of the greatest figures of Hungarian medicine. As it was mentioned before, the museum is located at Semmelweis’s birthplace and thus concentrates greatly on his work and life. The personal items kept in the display cases and the Memorial Room reflect the atmosphere of the era, and present the turning points of his career. The displayed collection is complemented by our website, which offers a compilation of available texts, photos and paintings.
