Hungarian Olympic and Sports Museum

The Hungarian Olympic and Sports Museum was established in 1963 with a national level collector’s mandate. Since 1st July 2012 it operates as a directorate of the National Sport Centres. This is the only sports museum in Hungary with a national level collector’s mandate. The scope of the gathering mainly focuses on the territory of historical Hungary but with regard to sports it covers the whole world.

The collection of the Hungarian and Olympic Sports Museum is very rich. It contains more than 800 thousand items including Olympic medals, trophies, photos and archived documents. In the last 25 years the museum has organised over 200 exhibitions. The most significant branches of sport, such as athletics, wrestling, rowing, cycling, football, fencing, or hiking, had their own complete historical displays. There were also comprehensive thematic exhibitions, for example the Scout Movement, History of Physical Education, Women in Hungarian Sports, Treasures of the Hungarian Sports Museum, Melbourne ’56, Jews in Hungarian Sports (put on display in Tel Aviv), etc. The presentation in 1995 at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne and the “Hungarians at the Olympic Games” exhibition were outstanding. The museum also held exhibitions in Sydney, Paris, and Singapore. Our mobile exhibitions toured the cities of the Carpathian basin (Hungarian Sportsmen – Sporting Hungarians) and our home settlements (Olympics and Education, Traditional Games, Tennis in Hungary, 100 years of the Hungarian University Sports Association, Hungarians at the Modern Olympic Games, Klebelsberg the “sports minister”) with great success. The most popular exhibitions of recent years were the photo exhibition of Károly Hemző, the history of the national stadium, and a poster and art exhibition organized jointly with the National Gallery.

The museum currently houses two events in the Sport Agóra exhibition hall, located next to the Papp László Budapest Sportaréna (1146 Budapest, Ifjúság útja 2). An Olympic history exhibition and the Ferenc Puskás Visitor Centre where comprehensive information is provided regarding the construction of the new national football stadium. Another exhibition is on display at the Bíbic Boathouse (1031 Budapest, Római Part 26) about the water sports life of Budapest in the last century.

The Hungarian Olympic and Sports Museum has a permanent hiking and touring history exhibition at Dobogókő-Pilisszentkereszt.
