Introduction if the King Saint Stepehen Museum (Székesfehérvár, Hungary)

The collections of the King Saint Stephen Museum in Székesfehérvár owns almost four millions piece of art. In our institute there are archaeological, ethnographical, arts and crafts, anthropological and hictorical collections.

In Székesfehérvár, wich were the city of the king-coronations in the middle ages, we are waiting the visitors in eleven exhibiton places. Archaeological findings are exhibited in „Cistercian Monastery” (it is our main building), in the Medieval Garden of Ruins and in our twelfth exhibition place, in the Archaeological Park of Gorsium. Ethnographical relics are visible in our building at the Országzászló square and in the open air museum of Palotaváros.

Arts and crafts collections are in the Black Eagle Chemist’s Museum, in the „Hetedhét” Toy Museum, in the Budenz-house, in the Csók István Gallery, in the City Gallery – Deák Collection, in the Pelican Gallery and in the „New Hungarian Gallery”.

Beyond the art exhibitions we organize academic courses, museum-pedagogy programs and concerts. In the renewed Gorsium Archaeological Park we also have a few thematic programs.

 

In the cours of the Hungarian Cultural Days of Cluj we intend to introduce four of our exhibiton places.

On ThursdayYou can get acquinted with the two collections of the „Hetedhét” Toy Museum. Unique in Hungary and well-known across Europe, the toy collection of Éva Moskovszky and her mother Erzsébet Auer reflects an exquisite toy-making art existent in the 18th and 19th centuries, with all its items telling much about the period and the desires of children having lived in it. For the youngest childrens we offer soft textiledolls with some lovely teddybear. The older children can dress dolls, or furnish a room of a family lived in th 19th century – in miniature size.

In the City Gallery the Deák Collection presents the most important trends and artists of modern Hungarian painting from the beginning of the 20th century until the eighties. Remarkable small sculptures and medallions complement the collection. On Fridaythe visitors can become acquainted with few special paintings from the collection with the assistance of our few puzzles.

In the Medieval Garden of Ruins – wich are also one of our Nationel Heritage sites – visitors can see the ruins of the coronation basilica built by King Saint Stephen. Numerous of our kings were crowned and later buried here in the Middle Ages. On Saturdayyou can make a coin with the portrait of King Béla III, László IV, Matthias Corvinus or Gábor Bethlen, prince of Transylvania. With the help of our interactive game you can get to know, how colud get ancient roman stone carvings into the ruins of the basilica.

Gorsium Archeological Park also belong to the King Saint Stephen Museum, an internationally significant anchient roman settlement. It is one of the tree most important anchient relics in Hungary. In one of the buildings, wich were made for protecting the ruins, visitors can see the remainings of the inn used in the II. and III. century AD. Here were organized a lot of feasts. On Sundayyou can learn about the ancient roman eating habits with the help of our interactive games and a few replicas. You can also think about how the ancient cuisine is different form the modern, and how is it similar.
