GÁBOR TAMÁS

Born in Cluj, the musical career of the well-known and acclaimed singer started once with his love for classical music and opera. As a secondary school pupil, he was selected into the children’s choir of the Hungarian and the Romanian Opera House in Cluj. Gábor Tamás is the performer of songs like Ó, Erdély, szép hazám *Oh, Transilvania, my beautiful homeland!) or A Donát úton nyílnak már az orgonák (Lilacs are blooming in Donát Street).

As of 1970, Gábor Tamás has given up on classical music and turned to dance music, having ever since been acknowledged as one of the pioneers of Hungarian dance music in Romania. Ex-editor of music programmes broadcasted in Hungarian by the Radiotelevision in Bucharest between 1968-1975, in 1976 he moved over to and settled in Sweden. As a sign of recognition of his merits in promoting the Hungarian culture, as well as his involvement into charity, the Hungarian Ministry of Culture and Public Education awarded him the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary. Besides, many Hungarian cities bestowed him the title of Citizen of Honour.

His mostly liked songs come from his love for his place of birth, his performing style remaining unmistakably the guarantee of a high quality. However, the public of the Hungarian Cultural Days has already had the opportunity to see him on the stage (2014), the beloved singer returning again onto the stage of the Treasure City this year.
